Repair or Replace? The Definitive Guide to Windshield Glass

A small rock chip can quickly turn into a major problem if it’s not addressed promptly. The good news is that, in many cases, a damaged windshield doesn't need to be fully replaced, saving you time and money.
Here, we explain everything you need to know about windshield repair and when it is the best option.

When Can a Windshield Be Repaired?
Windshield repair is possible when the damage is small, localized, and does not compromise the structural integrity of the glass or the driver's visibility.

Key Criteria for Repair:

  1. Size of the Damage: The general rule is that the chip must not be larger than one inch (approximately 2.5 cm) in diameter. Larger damages usually require a full replacement.

  2. Location of the Damage:

    • Critical Viewing Area: If the damage is directly in the Driver’s Line of Sight (the area in front of the steering wheel), even a small repair might require replacement, as the repair could leave a slight visual distortion.

    • Windshield Edges: Damages close to the edge (less than 1 or 2 inches) have a higher risk of spreading and may indicate structural weakening, often requiring a full replacement.

  3. Type of Damage: Ideal damages for repair are "bulls-eyes" (circular impact) and "stars" (short cracks radiating from the center). Long, linear cracks generally cannot be successfully repaired.

  4. Age of the Damage: The sooner you repair the chip, the better. Dirt, moisture, and debris that accumulate in the crack over time can complicate the repair process.

When is a Full Replacement Necessary?

Complete windshield replacement is mandatory if:

  • The damage is larger than one inch (2.5 cm).

  • You have a long crack (more than 3 inches or 7.5 cm).

  • The damage is in the driver's primary line of sight.

  • The damage extends to the edges of the glass.

  • The windshield is severely pitted (many chips) or damaged inside and out.

The Repair Process: From Damage to Solution

Windshield repair is a technical process that uses resin to restore the glass's integrity.

  1. Cleaning and Preparation: The damaged area is carefully cleaned and dried to remove any debris, moisture, or trapped air.

  2. Resin Injection: A special tool (injector) is used to create a vacuum and then inject a high-quality clear acrylic resin directly into the chip or crack. The pressure ensures the resin penetrates every fissure of the damage.

  3. Curing: Once the resin has filled the damage, ultraviolet (UV) light is applied to quickly cure and harden the resin. This solidifies the material, bonding the layers of glass.

  4. Finishing: Excess resin is scraped off the surface, and the area is polished to be as smooth and discreet as possible.

The result is a windshield that has regained much of its original strength, and where the damage is much less visible (although it won't disappear completely).

Important Recommendations

  • Act Fast! As soon as you notice a chip, call us. If you drive in cold weather and then use the heat with hot air, the temperature change can cause the chip to instantly turn into a long crack.

  • Cover the Damage: If you cannot repair the windshield immediately, place a small piece of clear tape over the chip. This helps prevent dirt and moisture from contaminating the crack.

  • Consult an Expert: Never attempt a DIY repair with low-quality kits. A professional uses the right resins and equipment to ensure the repair is safe and durable.
